Nairobi at Night

If you ever see an ambient noise CD entitled, “Nairobi at Night,” don’t buy it. Go with “Sounds of the Factory” instead — I promise you that the scream of machines and the occasional accidental death will be the more soothing than what I heard last night.

Car horns. House alarms. I’m pretty sure I heard the gnashing of teeth– it’s hard to tell because of all the wailing, dog barks and Bollywood soundtracks. Also, I can’t be certain, but I think someone lost a lung at about 5AM last night. And, I’m pretty sure there was a ceremony afterward.

Anna slept fine. So, that’s nice, but it makes me wonder what she’s seen, where’s she’s been and if Anna is her real name.

This looks calm, but it sounds like Godzilla is attacking the city and Nairobi's response is to scare him away with bad mufflers and scraping noises.

Swahili phrase of the day: “Ninajaribu kulala” — I’m trying to sleep.

Ha! I must have forgotten to tell you about the din of the walking dead at night in Westlands. Tusker and earplugs, my friend, served me well.

Perhaps it is a good thing and will be beneficial later in life with you and Anna enter the snoring (st)age. After this experience you will literally be able to sleep through anything. Miss you.
